Rostov the Great, Suzdal, Vladimir
The series of comprehensive study aids "Travelling around Russia" includes 7 booklets with tasks and texts and DVDs with films of more than 6 hours' total length. The texts included in the booklets are devoted to the history, culture and everyday life of such ancient Russian cities as Moscow, Pskov, Novgorod, Smolensk, Kaluga, Suzdal, Rostov and Vladimir, which played an important role in the formation and strengthening of Russian statehood. The booklets "Saint Petersburg" and "Moscow — the Capital of Russia" tell about the history and unique architectural appearance of the two Russian capitals. All the texts are based on everyday and social-cultural learning vocabulary and correspond to the First Certification Level (B1). The texts of the booklets and the films are interconnected in content: to complete the tasks, one must refer to the films. In this way foreign students develop and activate their reading, listening and speaking skills at the same time. The series is addressed first of all to foreign students of Russian, but it may also be useful to secondary-school pupils and to everyone interested in Russian history and culture.
An undoubted value of the series is its unique video footage. Thanks to the films, students learn not only about important events of Russian history but also become acquainted with the classics of Russian cinema.
The aid devoted to Rostov, Suzdal and Vladimir tells not only about the history of the oldest Russian cities but also about the lives and work of such remarkable Russians as Andrei Rublev, Sergius of Radonezh, Dmitry Donskoy, Yaroslav the Wise and Vladimir Monomakh.
